On May 16, 2011, the Space Shuttle Endeavour embarked on its final mission to the International Space Station (ISS), carrying the invaluable $2 billion Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS). This scientific instrument aimed to explore cosmic rays, offering insights into some of the most enigmatic cosmic mysteries. NASA astronaut Mike Fincke played a pivotal role as the officer in charge of the AMS tool during this historic mission.
Prior to the launch, the Assamese community in Houston bestowed their blessings upon Mike through a Nam Proxonggo ceremony organized for the mission. Known for his dedication to inspiring communities, Mike, at the request of the Assamese, included various cultural symbols in the mission payload. Among these were Assamese icons such as the traditional Gamusa and Japi, emblematic of Assam, along with a representation of Assam Tea. Additionally, a special piece of advice penned in Assamese script was carried, connecting the mission to its Assamese roots.
Notably, in 2008, Mike had previously taken a distinctive Assamese Pator Gamusa to space, autographed by fellow astronauts. This Space Gamusa was later framed and presented to the Chief Minister of Assam by the Federation of Assamese in Space (FASS), where it currently resides on display at Kalakhetra in Guwahati. The convergence of Assamese culture and space exploration, marked by these symbolic inclusions, adds a unique and culturally significant dimension to space missions.
